How to apply as an online student
Online undergraduate students
Ready to earn your bachelor's degree? Online undergraduate applicants generally need a minimum 2.0 cumulative GPA, though some programs have additional or higher requirements.
To apply, you'll need:
- An application for admission
- Your academic transcripts
- Any additional materials required by your program
Online transfer students
Already have college credit? Apply as an undergraduate or graduate student and send transcripts from each college or university you've attended. We accept up to 60 credit hours that can be applied to your degree and have extensive transfer options. We'll evaluate your eligible coursework to determine how it can apply toward your CMU degree.
Online graduate students
If you've completed or will soon complete a bachelor's degree, you can apply for a master's, specialist or graduate certificate program.
Most graduate programs require:
- A bachelor's degree from a regionally accredited institution
- A minimum 2.7 cumulative undergraduate GPA
- Official transcripts
- Any additional materials required by your program
Some programs may require a higher GPA, prerequisite coursework, professional experience or other materials
Online doctorate students
Doctorate program admission requirements vary by program. You'll need to meet CMU's graduate admission requirements as well as the academic, professional and application requirements for your doctoral program.
Review your individual program before applying for specific degree, GPA, experience and application requirements.
Online certificate students
Admission requirements depend on whether you're pursuing an undergraduate or graduate certificate.
Undergraduate certificate students should review the requirements for their specific program. Graduate certificate applicants generally follow CMU's graduate admission requirements, and some certificates may have additional program-specific requirements.
Online military students
Active-duty service members, National Guard and Reserve members, veterans, military spouses and dependents can earn their degree through CMU online. Admission requirements depend on the degree or certificate you're pursuing.
To apply, you'll need:
- An application for admission
- Your academic transcripts from colleges or universities you've attended
- Your military transcript, if applicable, so your military education and training can be evaluated for potential college credit
- Documentation of your military status if you're requesting application fee waiver or other military benefits
- Any additional materials required by your program
If you're currently serving, talk with your Educational Services Officer (ESO) or military education counselor about your education goals and available benefits before enrolling.
Transferring to CMU Online
Bring your credits. Keep moving forward.
You worked hard for the college credits you've already earned. When you transfer to CMU Online, we'll evaluate your previous coursework and help you understand how your eligible credits can apply toward your bachelor's degree.
Undergraduate transfer credit may be accepted from regionally accredited, degree-granting institutions. Generally, coursework must have a grade of C- or better to be considered for transfer. Certain competency courses require a C or better.
You'll need to:
- Apply for admission to CMU
- Send a transcript from each institution you've attended
- Have your previous coursework evaluated
- Work with your advisor to understand how your credits apply to your degree
You can also use CMU's transfer tools before enrolling to get a preliminary idea of how previous coursework may transfer.
More than transfer credits count
College courses aren't the only learning that may move you closer to your degree. Professional experience, military education and training, certifications and other college-level learning may qualify for credit through CMU's alternative credit options.
