How do I activate my CMU Global ID?
Your Global ID gives you access to all the online tools you'll use as a CMU student, including:
- CentralLink
- CMU email
- Blackboard
- Course registration
- Degree Progress
- Student billing
Activate your Global ID as soon as you're admitted and check your CMU email regularly. The university will send important updates about registration, financial aid, billing and your upcoming semester there.
Do I need to complete orientation?
Yes.
Online student orientation introduces you to the technology, services and resources available as a CMU Online student. You'll learn how to navigate university systems, access your courses and connect with the people who are here to support your success.
Orientation is one of the best ways to prepare for your first semester as an online student.
Should I meet with an advisor?
Most students should connect with an advisor before registering for classes.
Your advisor can help you:
- Build your course schedule
- Understand degree requirements
- Review transfer credits
- Stay on track for graduation
Some cohort-based programs automatically register students for courses. If you're unsure whether you should register yourself, contact your program or advisor before enrolling.
How do I access Blackboard?
Blackboard is where you'll complete most of your coursework.
You'll use Blackboard to:
- Access course materials.
- Submit assignments
- Participate in discussions
- View grades
- Communicate with instructors

Registration FAQs
How do I register for online classes at CMU?
Activate your Global ID, review your degree plan, meet with your advisor if needed, then register through CMU's Course Search and Registration system. Always verify course dates before completing your registration.
What if my class is full?
Some online courses offer a waitlist.
If a course is full, you may be able to add yourself to the waitlist. You'll receive confirmation if you're successfully added, and you'll be notified if a seat becomes available.
What if I'm a military or cohort student?
Registration may be different depending on your program.
Military students should follow the tuition assistance process required by your military branch in addition to registering for classes.
Cohort students are often registered automatically by your program administrator. If you're unsure whether you need to register yourself, contact your program before enrolling.
When should I register?
Registration opens before each semester, and registering early gives you the best selection of available courses.
CMU Online registration generally closes at 11:59 p.m. (ET) the day before a course begins. View our academic calendar for important dates and deadlines.
What if I receive a registration error?
If you receive an error while registering, contact the Registrar's Office at 989-774-3261 or email registrar@cmich.edu. Registration errors are often related to prerequisites, holds or registration eligibility.
What if I have a financial hold?
Financial holds can prevent you from registering for classes. contact Student Accounts office at 989-774-3618 or email OneCentral@cmich.edu to resolve the hold before registration.
