The DET: An online instructional technology doctoral program
The online Doctorate in Educational Technology (DET) is designed for research with a practical purpose. Typically that research applies to the use of technology in educating or training people where you work or where you want to work.
In this online DET, you’ll learn how to use qualitative and quantitative research methods to be confident that you know how well educational technology or technology-based training programs are meeting their objectives.
The program is 100% online with no face-to-face requirements.
You’ll develop a real-world dissertation that’s both practical and publishable. And you’ll network with peers from all sectors while learning from faculty experts in educational technology.

How much does an online educational technology degree cost?
The cost shown below is based on the current tuition and fee estimate. Your actual cost of attendance for financial aid purposes may vary based on your assigned tuition rate, the number of credits you're enrolled in and the length of your enrollment period. If you're enrolled in a single module instead of a full semester, your housing and food, transportation and personal expenses will be adjusted based on the number of weeks you're enrolled (for example, 12-week or 8-week modules). If you're enrolled less than half-time, your cost of attendance will not include housing and food, personal expenses or loan fees.

Admission requirements
In order to be considered for admission to the program, you must have completed a master's degree with a minimum graduate grade point average of 3.0 or higher or be willing to enroll in the MA in Learning, Design and Technology program. Three years of professional education experience is preferred. You must complete a departmental writing assessment or the Graduate Record Exam (GRE) or Miller Analogy Test (MAT).
Review of complete applications begins March 1 and October 1 and continues until the cohort is filled. A completed application will include the following materials:
- A completed graduate application
- Transcripts of all undergraduate and graduate work
- Résumé of professional education experience
- Departmental writing assessment or Graduate Record Exam (GRE) or Miller Analogy Test (MAT)
- Short essay describing the relationship between your professional goals and the D.E.T. program
- Three letters of recommendation that attest to your potential to succeed in the program
After reviewing your credentials, the Doctoral Program Committee will select those to be interviewed. The Doctoral Program Committee will make all decisions regarding admissions. The total application package will be evaluated holistically.
Proof of English proficiency is required for admission to any of CMU's graduate programs. Although most international applicants meet that requirement by having an official TOEFL score report sent to us, there are other acceptable methods of proof. You can meet the requirement by submitting IELTS scores or MELAB scores, or by having completed an entire course of study (bachelor's degree, master's degree, etc.) at an institution where the language of instruction is English.
