Why earn an online structured literacy graduate certificate?
Reading is one of the foundational skills of any education. When a child struggles with language or literacy, early intervention is critical to their future success.
Structured literacy is an evidence-based approach grounded in the science of reading that explicitly and systematically addresses all foundational elements of language. This benefits all students and is essential for learners with dyslexia.
Our program is accredited by the International Dyslexia Association – the only one in Michigan with this distinction. It's also fully online, so you can advance your skills while balancing your education and career.
Become a certified Structured Literacy Dyslexia Interventionist. After completing the six online courses in our structured language and literacy intervention program and passing the Knowledge and Practice Examination for Effective Reading Instruction (KPEERI), you’ll be certified to identify and support students with literacy disorders, including dyslexia.

This online certificate is taught as a partnership between CMU’s Herbert H. and Grace A. Dow College of Health Professions and our College of Education and Human Services. You’ll have expert instructors from both the special education and general education fields of literacy intervention.

How much does an online structured language and literacy intervention certificate cost?
The cost shown below is based on the current tuition and fee estimate. Your actual cost of attendance for financial aid purposes may vary based on your assigned tuition rate, the number of credits you're enrolled in and the length of your enrollment period. If you're enrolled in a single module instead of a full semester, your housing and food, transportation and personal expenses will be adjusted based on the number of weeks you're enrolled (for example, 12-week or 8-week modules). If you're enrolled less than half-time, your cost of attendance will not include housing and food, personal expenses or loan fees.

Admission requirements
Regular admission
- You must have an earned bachelor's degree with a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher.
- You must maintain a 3.0 GPA with no grade lower than a B in the certificate classes.
Accelerated admission for current CMU undergraduates
- Application Deadlines: The recommended deadlines for applications are March 15 to begin in Fall; and October 15 to begin in Spring. The final deadlines to apply are four weeks before the end of the semester preceding your start term as an accelerated graduate student.
- Completion of at least 15 credits at CMU with a minimum 3.0 cumulative GPA at the time you apply.
- You must have completed a minimum of 60 undergraduate credits (including transfer and AP credits) before starting coursework in the accelerated structured language and literacy intervention certificate program.
Admissions process for accelerated admission
- Submit an online admission application to the accelerated structured language and literacy intervention certificate program.
- Meet with the graduate program advisor, Dr. Katie Squires (squir1k@cmich.edu) or Dr. Stephanie Richards (richa2sa@cmich.edu) to identify courses that will be double-counted on the Accelerated Graduate Degree Program Acknowledgement and Approval form. This form is on the Office of Graduate Studies website.
- You will also need to meet with your undergraduate CSD advisor to add the structured language and literacy intervention certificate courses to your academic plan.
